MLN 7/4 - What Sports Illustrated Curse?

By: Kevin J. Cunningham

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Fresno 6, Tucson 3

Top Lines:
C Eli Whiteside - 3-4, 1 R, 1 2B (5), 3 RBI, .291
2B Eugenio Velez - 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SB (13), 1 CS (8), .308
1B Brett Harper - 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, .311
SS Ehire Adrianza - 0-2, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 SO, .500
SP Pat Misch - 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 4.70 ERA, W (3-3)
RP Geno Espineli - 0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 1.91 ERA, H (6)
RP Erick Threets - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 4.44 ERA, H (5)
RP Kevin Gryboski - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 4.72 ERA, S (3)

Game Notes: Eugenio Velez continues to do very well in the Pacific Coast League.  Velez is now 4 for 13 in June with a double and a home run.  His two stolen bases increases his success rate to just short of 62%, which should still be higher for his speed.  Whiteside is hitting well, but has just five doubles and no other extra-base hits in 29 games.  Harper is batting .467 over his last ten with three walks and three strikeouts.  On the year, he has 38 strikeouts and 9 walks.

Misch won an increasingly rare game, his first since returning to Fresno in June.  The one earned run was his least in Fresno since April 16th.  Since coming back, he has a 5.48 ERA over four starts, and the five innings is his second-longest in that time.  Espineli struggled for a bit in mid-June, but the newly named PCL All-Star had his third scoreless outing in a row.  He has 40 strikeouts and six walks in 47 innings.  Threets now has four such scoreless outings, but just 21 strikeouts and 15 walks in 26 1/3 innings.  Of note, Nate Schierholtz has not appeared since leaving the June 30th game early for undisclosed reasons.

The Pacific Coast League named its All-Star Representatives to face the International League, and the Grizzlies got two on the roster.  Espineli, one of the top relievers in the league, got one of those spots.  Infielder Ivan Ochoa, who is batting .322/.401/.458, got the other spot thanks to his hot hitting (he's batting .500 in his last ten games).

Connecticut Defenders (AA): Connecticut 4, New Hampshire 3

Top Lines:
2B Kyle Haines - 3-4, 1 R, 1 2B (8), 1 RBI, 1 CS (3), .313
LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve - 2-4, 1 2B (10), 1 CS (1), .305
SS Jake Wald - 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B (8), .275
C Pablo Sandoval - 1-4, 2 RBI, 1 SO, .250
CF-RF Ben Copeland - 1-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 E (4), 1 CS (5), .243
SP Ben Snyder - 5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 8.64
RP Ronnie Ray - 3.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 3.51 ERA, W (3-1)
RP Justin Hedrick - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO, 1.67 ERA, S (1)

Game Notes: Connecticut's winning ways continued, and a five-game sweep of the last place Fisher Cats ensued.  Snyder looked a lot more improved in his second start in Double-A, though he had some trouble in the fifth inning.  He up a walk, a single and a double with no outs, and with the help of two sacrifice flies, three runs came in.  But in the 8th inning, an error and a Copeland sacrifice bunt that did not result in an out loaded the bases for Sandoval.  Sandoval came through with a 2-RBI single that tied the game, and Copeland scored on a wild pitch for the winning run.

Martinez-Esteve hit his second double in five games.  Haines is batting .297 over his last ten games, but does have seven walks against five strikeouts.  He now has 24 walks and 23 strikeouts.  Wald is batting .419 over his last 31 at-bats, perhaps energized since the Fresno Ballgirl video, featuring him being 'showed up', came out.  Sandoval has just four RBI in nine games since his promotion, and now has six strikeouts on the season.  Copeland had been cold, going hitless in his last nine at-bats, before his hit today.  Hedrick celebrated his All-Star appearance with his seventh scoreless outing in a row.

San Jose Giants (High-A): San Jose 7, Bakersfield 6

Top Lines:
CF Dom Duggan - 3-4, 1 R, 1 2B (9), 2 RBI, 1 SO, .250
2B Brock Bond - 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B (3), 1 RBI, .448
LF Bobby Felmy - 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B (16), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .299
DH Dayton Buller - 2-4, 1 2B (2), 1 RBI, 2 SO, 1 SB (5), .235
3B Brad Boyer - 2-4, 2 R, .366
SP Jesse English - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 SO, 1 HR, 2.47 ERA
RP Steven Edlefsen - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, 1 HR, 3.02 ERA, H (7)
RP Mike Musgrave - 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 1 HR, 2.36 ERA, BS (2)
RP Joe Paterson - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2.35 ERA, W (2-0)
RP Dan Otero - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1.69 ERA, S (3)

Game Notes: It took some late drama to keep San Jose running hot and sweep the Blaze.  In the 9th inning, with the score lied, Duggan singled, stole second, and scored on a Bond double.    That came after San Jose relievers allowed solitary runs in each the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to allow Bakersfield to come back and tie the score.

Duggan's three-hit game breaks a streak where he was 2 for 19 in sporadic appearances going back to May.  Bond remains ridiculously hot, and now has half as many doubles in 7 California League games as he had in 42 South Atlantic League games.  Felmy remains hot, inching closer to .300.  He has seven multi-hit games in his last eight, with four doubles, two triples and a home run in that streak.  English has a 2.06 ERA over his last 52 1/3 innings, with 57 strikeouts against 19 walks.  Paterson has six straight scoreless outings, with 10 strikeouts and six walks in the last 11 innings.  Otero walked his first in San Jose, while getting one strikeout in each of his five San Jose games.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A): Augusta 5, Charleston 4

Top Lines:
3B Andrew Davis - 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B (19), 3 RBI, .275
1B Angel Villalona - 1-3, 1 R, 1 HBP, .240
2B Nick Noonan - 1-3, 1 BB, 1 PO, .302
SP Gib Hobson - 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 1.80 ERA
RP Waldis Joaquin - 3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 3.69 ERA, W (1-1)
RP Andy De La Garza - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1 WP, 1 Balk, 3.33 ERA, S (2)

Game Notes: The GreenJackets kept up their winning ways.  They scored three runs int he fourth, on the back of back-to-back doubles by Davis and Nestor Rojas.  Just when Charleston managed to scrape back into a tie, a Thomas Neal single and a Davis double gave the GreenJackets two more runs for the win.

Davis and his two doubles powered the offense.  He has five since June 24th, as well as seven of his 32 RBI.  Villalona has 12 hits in his last 39 at-bats, with two doubles and two home runs.  During that time, he has eight strikeouts and one walk.  Noonan notched his first walk of July, and first in sixteen games, dating to June 12th.  Hobson made his first start in Augusta, after posting a 5.23 ERA in three starts at Salem-Keizer.  Joaquin got his first win in 22 appearances, only three of which were starts.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short-A): Salem-Keizer 12, Tri-City 5

Top Lines:
C Trent Kline - 1-3, 2 R, 1 HR (2), 3 RBI, 2 BB, .238
CF Damon Wright - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (3), 2 RBI, .241
DH Caleb Curry - 2-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, .296
1B Mike Loberg - 2-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, .324
2B Ryan Lormand - 1-3, 1 R, 1 3B (1), 1 RBI, 2 BB, .246
RF Francisco Peguero - 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .500
SP Andy Reichard - 5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 HBP, 3.75 ERA, W (3-0)
RP Stephen Macfarland - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, 9.00 ERA
RP Trey Webb - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1 WP, 4.50 ERA

Game Notes: The Volcanoes had a bit of an offensive explosion to get back to winning and take a three game lead in the West division.  After falling down 1-0 in the top of the third, the Volcanoes found themselves with two out and a man on second.  Lormand tripled in the typing run, and a hit batter following by a Loberg single scored the go-ahead run.  Kline walked to load the bases, and consecutive singles by Pegeuro, Curry and Wright scored five runs to give S-K a 7-1 lead.

Kline's second home run of the season was a three-run shot to ice the game.  Wright has six RBI on the season.  Loberg raised his average a little more, and his OPS closed in upon .800.  Francisco Peguero made his Short-A debut.  Peguero had been hitting .261/.309/.350 in Augusta, after moving straight there from the DSL last season.  Andy Reichard's first start of the season was successful, though he had notched two wins in relief.

AZL Giants (Rookie): Giants 9, Mariners 6

Top Lines:
1B C.J. Ziegler - 2-5, 2 SO, .385
DH Josh Mazzola - 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR (1), 2 RBI, .158
C Johnny Monell - 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B (3), 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB (2), 1 PB, .353
CF Wendell Fairley - 0-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP, .200
3B Dan Cook - 0-3, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 E (1), 1 HBP, .000
SP Kyle Nicholson - 4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 3.86 ERA
RP Brandon Grabham - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 2.70 ERA, W (2-0)
RP Kyle Woodruff - 1.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 2.45 ERA, H (1)
RP Mario Rodriguez - 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 3.00 ERA
RP Chris Wilson - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1.50 ERA, S (1)

Game Notes: The Rookies bounced back from their last game, a tough loss.  The team notched just six hits, but five Mariners errors and four walks helped load on more scoring for the win, although leading to just two unearned runs.  Mazzola's home run was just his third hit of the season in 19 at-bats.  Monell has hits in all five games he's played, along with three doubles.  He has 7 RBI in those games.  Fairely and Cook each got a walk and a hit-by-pitch but no hits to get on base, but combined for five runs.

Nicholson made his second start of the year, combining for just seven innings.  Grabham has six strikeouts and four walks in 6 2/3 innings so far.  Woodruff allowed three hits, all singles, in just one inning, thanks to a couple of line drives keeping runners from advancing.  Wilson has five strikeouts and two walks in six innings, earning his first save.

Merkin Valdez is scheduled to appear in the Arizona League as soon as this weekend, if a scheduled Friday throwing session goes well.
