MLN 5/8 - Mooney Shines, Snyder Sparkles

By: Kevin J. Cunningham

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): New Orleans 9, Fresno 7

Top Lines:
RF Nate Schierholtz - 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B (6), 1 HR (3), 4 RBI, .308
1B Brett Harper - 2-4, 1 2B (7), 1 RBI, 1 BB, .281
CF Clay Timpner - 2-5, 2 R, 1 3B (2), 1 SO, .284
LF Brian Horwitz - 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR (3), 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .317
2B Travis Denker - 1-3, 1 2B (3), 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 E (2), .235
SP Brooks McNiven - 1.1 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 15.63, L (0-1)
RP Jesse Foppert - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 2.76 ERA
RP Geno Espineli - 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 0.87 ERA

Game Notes: Fresno's offense could not overcome a rough start by McNiven.  McNiven's second Fresno start ended up rough, after he gave up four earned runs over five innings in his first start.  The bullpen did the rest of the work, but Fresno could not overcome the deficit.  Foppert is still having problems with control, with 12 walks over 16 1/3 innings against just 11 strikeouts.  Espineli continues to throw very well, posting his longest outing since April 27th, but still allowing just one baserunner.

Schierholtz had a big day, matching his third triple hit earlier this week with his third home run.  While Schierholtz is batting .292 against LHP, every one of his extra base hits have come off of RHP.  Timpner has evened out a little, batting .275 over his last ten games against his .284 season average.  Horwitz improbably has as many home runs as Schierholtz, but has just one double and no triples.  Denker bounced back from going 0 for 5 in his last two games.

Connecticut Defenders (AA): Connecticut 3, Harrisburg 2

Top Lines:
1B Travis Ishikawa - 2-4, 1 2B (7), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .259
3B David Maroul - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (10), 1 HR (3), 1 RBI, .245
RF Ben Copeland - 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B (4), 1 SO, .243
CF Antoan Richardson - 2-4, 1 3B (2), .174
SP Garrett Broshuis - 6.0 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 4.04 ERA
RP Kelvin Pichardo - 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 SO, 2.76 ERA, W (1-2)
RP Osiris Matos - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1.40 ERA, S (2)

Game Notes: Connecticut's offensive outburst in Binghamton hasn't carried over, but Connecticut has continued to find some wins.  Broshuis's pitching performance may look ugly with a 2.00 WHIP, but it was effective, even if he didn't get a win out of it.  Pichardo picked up his first win in relief, and had his first scoreless outing after allowing four earned runs in his four last games.  Matos picked up his second save in the second straight game, supplanting Sergio Romo as closer for now.

Maroul had the biggest day, with a double and home run, the latter of which was the game-breaking shot in the top of the 9th inning.  Ishikawa is 10 for 17 in his last four games with three doubles and a home run now.  Copeland is now batting .243/.323/.405 after his fourth triple.  He has as many triples as doubles now.  Richardson has been having all sorts of problems.  He is batting 15 for 86 on the season, but his two triples are his only extra-base hits.

San Jose Giants (High-A): San Jose 6, Lake Elsinore 0

Top Lines:
SS Omar Vizquel - 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, .500
RF Mike Mooney - 3-4, 2 R, 1 2B (3), 1 HR (2), 1 RBI, 1 SO, 1 SB (2), .538
LF Dom Duggan - 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B (5), 2 RBI, 1 BB, .316
C Pablo Sandoval - 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, .431
CF Mike McBryde - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (2), .272
SP Ben Snyder - 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 SO, 1 WP, 0.85 ERA, W (4-0)
RP Dan Griffin - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1.33 ERA

Game Notes: San Jose's pitching was good enough that the team's offense was nearly unnecessary.  Snyder's seven inning shutout was his second such game this season, although he did not walk any in that first game.  Snyder's four wins come in his last five games, which exclude two previous shutout efforts.  Griffin has been unscored upon in four of his last five games.  However, in each of his last three outings, each two innings long, he has just one strikeout in each.

Vizquel's rehab assignment continues, and he played nearly the entire game, being replaced just for the eighth and ninth innings.  Mooney has still just played in seven games, but he had three hits in each of the last two games and his numbers look very good.  Duggan has cooled off, going 7 for 25 in his last ten games, but he has a double in three of his last five games where he got plate appearances.  Sandoval has been consistent recently (.432 average in the last ten games, .431 average overall), but he has not had a hit for extra-bases since April 30th.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A): Augusta 4, Columbus 3

Top Lines:
SS Charlie Culberson - 2-4, 1 3B (1), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .122
LF Garrett Baker - 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .233
2B Nick Noonan - 0-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, .286
C Jackson Williams - 0-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, E (1), .141
RP T.J. Brewer - 6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1 HBP, 3.86 ERA
RP Dan Turpen - 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2.78 ERA
RP Joe Paterson - 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2.91 ERA, W (4-1)
RP Dan Otero - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0.00 ERA, S (6)

Game Notes: Augusta's offense scratched out just enough runs to take this game.  Two leadoff walks led to two first inning runs to give Augusta an edge.  Shane Jordan would come around on Baker's single, while Noonan came around on an Andrew Davis single.  But it was a James Simmons single in the eighth that was the difference in this one.

Baker has been hot in recent games, going 7 for 11 in his last three games, with a triple and home run.  He's batting .343 over his last ten games.  Culberson broke a five-game hitless streak, and had his first multi-hit game since April 20th.  Noonan drew just his fourth walk on the season.
