The San Francisco Giants are getting even younger, and soon will have a new player making his major league debut.
Emmanuel Burriss in Fresno

The Giants plan to purchase the contract of Manny Burriss on Sunday, putting the young infielder in line for his major league debut soon. The move comes at the expense of outfielder Rajai Davis, who was designated for assignment on Saturday.
In other news, the Giants placed relief pitcher Erick Threets on the 15-Day Disabled List, and called up recently demoted pitcher Keichii Yabu to replace him.
Burriss, 23, was originally drafted with the 33rd pick overall in the 2006 draft, in the first compensation round. He was the Giants’ first pick after they took Tim Lincecum in the same draft, and will be the third Giants’ pick from that draft to make the majors, along with shortstop Brian Bocock. Noted as a speedster, Burriss was hitting .258 (16 for 62) in Triple-A Fresno with two stolen bases in four attempts.
Manager Bruce Bochy said of calling up Burriss “It gives us a little more flexibility,” noting Burriss’ ability to play shortstop or second base.
In SFDugout.com’s off-season rankings, Burriss ranked as the team’s #15 prospect in the system.
Davis, 27, must clear waivers before he can make it back to the minors. The team indicated that they were looking for him to get more playing time in the minors, as the Giants had many outfielders, including regular infielders Eugenio Velez and Dan Ortmeier, that were taking up playing time. When he had played, Davis had collected just one hit in eighteen at-bats, a paltry .056 average. Davis had hit .282 with San Francisco in 51 games in 2007, with 17 stolen bases in 21 attempts.
Threets was placed on the disabled list with a body injury on his right side. Before the injury, Threets had thrown ten innings for a 3.60 ERA, walking nine and striking out six. Yabu had just been sent to Fresno earlier this week to make room for Vinnie Chulk upon his return from injury. He had a 3.86 ERA in 9 1/3 innings for the Giants before being sent down.
